Is sewage in the house really that bad?
Yes. Under S500 a backup counts as grossly contaminated.
That standard files a waste-line backup in its dirtiest class. The porous items it soaked, mattresses, padding, rugs, are thrown out. Disinfecting them all the way through cannot be done.
